Constitutes the fourth part, sole issue of the second Latin edition of Theodor de Bry's Great voyages, printed in fourteen parts, in Latin, German, French, and English, in Frankfurt am Main, Oppenheim, and Hanau from 1590-1644, and the Elenchus, an outline of the thirteen Latin parts, published by Matthias Merian in Frankfurt am Main in 1634
This work has been identified as the sole issue of the second Latin edition of the Great voyages by Church
Imprint supplied by Church, as there is no colophon in the second edition
The Roman numeral dates on title pages are made with backwards C's
The second issue of Latin part four can be identified by both title pages printed with the poorly reprinted "privelegio", with the first "e' still somewhat visible, and both title pages with the "Ad invistis Rudolphus II. Rom. imperator"; this edition is a page for page reprint of the first edition, with slight differences as follows: p. [4], 1st count, has line 23 ending "dictum", p. [5], 1st count has line 1 ending "In-", p. [7], 1st count, lacks a catchword, p. 1-7, 2nd count, have marginal notes in an Italic font, p. 9 lacks a tail piece, p. 109 is numbered correctly, the running title reads "Americae liber IV", and leaf O3 is missigned E3; plates I-XXIIII have Arabic numerals engraved on the coppers, with those of 2, 6, and the 6 of 16 engraved in reverse
Latin translation, by Urbain Chauveton, of book one of: Historia del Mondo Nuovo / by Girolamo Benzoni, first printed Venice, 1565, which was first printed in Latin, Geneva, 1578, under title: Novae Novi Orbis historiae
Despite this being a translation of book one only, as is identified on p. 11, 2nd count, the running title reads: Americae liber IV and on p. 145 the last line of text erroneously reads: "Finis libri qvarti"
This part contains the beginning of Girolamo Benzoni's Historia del Mondo Nuovo. The remainder was published in the parts V and VI. Benzoni's work was first published in Itlaian at Venice in 1565. It was translated into Latin by Urbain Chauveton. He also translated the work into French. De Bry has followed Chauveton's translation which was published at Geneva in 1578, and has added to it Latin translations of some of the notes which appeared in the French edition. Cf. Church
